Профессор медицины Николай Степанович добился вершин в науке, пользуется почетом среди студентов и уважением коллег. Однако семейная жизнь уже не приносит той радости, что раньше. Жена Варвара Андреевна, которую он когда-то страстно любил, раздражает, кажется мелочной и пустой, а дочь Лиза разочаровывает, собираясь замуж за неподходящего человека. Радуют Николая Степановича только встречи с приемной дочерью Катей, которая оказалась под опекой семьи профессора много лет назад после смерти родителей. Но и ее жизнь тоже не складывается: она мечтала стать актрисой, но разочаровалась в сцене, пережила несчастную любовь, похоронила ребенка.
Как врач Николай Степанович понимает, что умирает, и пытается найти внутреннее равновесие и примириться с родными.
В спектакле сюжет повести Чехова разворачивается в пространстве полумистическом, где перемешиваются бессонница и кошмарные сны, реальность и вымысел.
Премьера запланирована на 2, 3 октября 2025 года на Основной сцене Театра Маяковского.
