В основе спектакля лежат тексты «Крейцеровой сонаты» Льва Толстого и «Дороги перемен» Ричарда Йейтса, которые по-разному осмысляют трагедию брака как классическую ловушку созависимости, выжигающую живые чувства. Это два взгляда — мужской и женский — на семью, брак и отношения. Обе истории строятся вокруг попытки вырваться из тупика, которая оборачивается провалом. Каждый из героев максимально искренен и хочет разобраться, в чём причина внутреннего разрыва между людьми, некогда сильно любившими друг друга. Но для того, чтобы избежать катастрофы (которая часто начинается с привычки не слышать друг друга), нужно перестать игнорировать правду, какой бы она ни была, и осознать «безнадёжную пустоту». Ведь проблема не в месте и обстоятельствах, а в неспособности иначе взглянуть на себя и на другого.
Екатерина Половцева, режиссер: «Мне хотелось бы, чтобы спектакль вызывал желание беречь своих жён и мужей. Несмотря на безысходные обстоятельства, важно оставаться милосердными и понимающими, осознавая, что у каждого свой внутренний ад и всё, чего мы хотим, — это быть любимыми. Герои в спектакле мучительно исповедуются зрителю в попытке хоть как-то оправдать себя и обвинить всех и вся, что так устроен мир. Но они неминуемо возвращаются к трагедии в конце. Как будто мы попадаем в воронку времени и начинаем всё сначала в надежде, что на этот раз будет совсем по-другому. Ведь свет пробивается тогда, когда ты перестаёшь бояться всматриваться во тьму».
Мария Рыщенкова, исполнительница роли жены: «Особенно ценными для меня являются темы, которые легли в основу спектакля. Это вечные вопросы, волнующие, вероятно, каждого. Что такое брак и семья? Что помогает сохранить любовь и взаимопонимание, а что, наоборот, разрушает их? Вместе с режиссёром мы исследуем эти непростые материи через призму произведений двух совершенно разных авторов. Этот контраст позволяет нам взглянуть на отношения в паре объёмно, рассказать две истории и показать их с двух ракурсов: мужского и женского».
Антон Падерин, исполнитель роли мужа: «Этот спектакль для меня, в первую очередь, о понимании любви, которое есть не поиск одной истины, а попытка увидеть любовь с разных сторон. На что человек готов (или не готов) пойти ради сохранения брака и отношений? Ведь важно помнить, что речь не только о чувствах, но и о выборе, взаимной заботе и уважении.
